Dr Tavakoli’s
Philosophy on
Non-Surgical
Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Throughout history, people have looked for ways to achieve a younger, more vibrant look by improving their facial appearance. Non-Surgical Anti Wrinkle Injections can be used for treatment of facial lines and wrinkles.

Anti-wrinkle Injections have been safely used for certain medical conditions for more than a decade. This procedure, sometimes referred to as cosmetic denervation, has been considered a safe and effective way of treating aging skin. Dr Tavakoli’s respected cosmetic surgery  practice offers  Sydney and interstate clients Anti-wrinkle Injections  to provide a youthful and refreshed appearance.

The  Anti wrinkle treatments  are used to eliminate or reduce worry and frown lines, “crows feet”, laugh lines, and other wrinkles sometimes called dynamic wrinkles.

Dr Tavakoli has recently been interviewed by Women’s Weekly about the hype over Anti wrinkle Injections:

Anti-wrinkle Injections are highly purified proteins derived in a controlled fashion from bacteria, like other agents such as penicillin are derived from mould.

It is injected in small dosages and works by blocking nerve impulses that trigger wrinkle-causing muscle contractions.

Indications for Anti-wrinkle Injections include frown and forehead lines. It can also be used for treatment of ”crows feet” and other areas of the face. There are further studies being conducted to ensure the safety of injecting Anti wrinkle Injections into other areas of the face.

Anti-wrinkle Injections create a smoothed and improved appearance. Repeat injections can prevent the onset and/or deepening of wrinkled areas.

The cosmetic effects of Anti wrinkle Injections are usually noticeable within 5-7 days of treatment. The results can last between 3-6 months, depending on the strength and contraction of the muscle.

The entire procedure takes up to 15 minutes and you can resume normal activity immediately.

Temporary side effects that some may experience with Anti-wrinkle Injections can include tenderness and bruising at the site of injection. Less frequent side effects can include headache, temporary eyelid droop and nausea.

Anti-wrinkle Injections have been medically developed for both therapeutic and cosmetic use. TGA recommended dosages have been deemed safe for administration and could not lead to poisoning/botulism.

As a plastic surgeon I am constantly finding wider usage for Anti-wrinkle Injections in my clinical practice. I have found the best candidate is someone in their late 20′s to early 50′s who is concerned about wrinkle lines in the forehead and around the eyes  (crow’s feet).  The use of  Anti-wrinkle Injections eliminates the frown lines  temporarily and prevents long-term formation of permanent wrinkles that do not respond to the use of this product.

Unfortunately Anti-wrinkle Injections cannot treat all problems. Although it is true that the rate of patients  undergoing cosmetic brow-lift (temporal lift)  has decreased due to the success of Anti wrinkle Injections; there are patients that will require a surgical procedure in order to lift the droopy eyebrows. This can now be achieved permanently, through the use of an endoscope via small incisions in the scalp. An  Endoscopic Brow Lift  is performed under general anaesthetic in an operating theatre by plastic surgeons trained in  cosmetic surgery.

Anti wrinkle Injections are a prescription-only treatment and should only be administered by a qualified medical practitioner who knows how to perform Anti wrinkle treatments correctly. Furthermore, a detailed knowledge of muscular anatomy of the forehead and periorbital regions is imperative for the success of this procedure.

People should ask their injector if he/she has been trained in the  Anti wrinkle Injections technique.

Non Surgical Liquid Face Lift

Facial ageing reflects the cumulative effects of decreased tissue elasticity, gravity, bone reabsorbtion, and the loss of subcutaneous fat and hyaluronic acid.

Subcataneous fat plays an important role by providing volume and support to our face. Volume decrease creates areas of flatness and hollows, giving an aged and tired look.

A liquid face lift involves improvement of every area of the face. Combining treatments of dermal fillers and anti wrinkle injections, the end result is a significantly more youthful and refreshed appearance.

The objective of the treatment is to replace or enhance facial volume and restore the youthful contours of the face. Our aim is to help clients make educated decisions about non-surgical liquid facial rejuvenation.

Treatments can be performed quickly and efficiently, requiring very little down-time enabling clients to return to work and daily activities almost immediately after treatment.

Areas of the face that can be rejuvenated:

Upper face:

  • Temple hollowing
  • Brow enhancement
  • Crows feet
  • Frown lines

Mid face:

  • Tear troughs
  • Cheek enhancement
  • Nasolabial folds

Lower face:

  • Smile lines
  • Lips
  • Corners of the mouth
  • Chin
  • Jowls

Dr Tavakoli’s Philosophy on Dermal Fillers Treatment

Dermal fillers are effective in minimising fine lines and wrinkles and creating volume throughout the layers of the skin. Dermal fillers can be used to contour and plump as well as improve imperfections. Accurate treatments enhance facial features and create a smooth and youthful appearance.

temporary filler  is a Non-Animal Stabilised body substance. When this type of  dermal filler  is injected into the skin it creates volume for the treatment of lips, lines, wrinkles and facial folds.

The results achieved from this type of treatment are immediate as evidenced by the satisfied clients we have in our dermal fillers before and after gallery.

Temporary fillers were introduced in 1996 and have since been used on hundreds of thousands of people world-wide.

Temporary dermal filler  is a colorless transparent gel consisting of different sized particles. They are pre-packed in a glass syringes each containing 1ml of product.

Dermal fillers are sterile, visco-elastic and free from products of animal origin, so pre-testing for hypersensitivity is generally not required.

Temporary dermal fillers last from six months up to a year. The lasting-life of the treatment depends on a number of factors; the area being treated, the depth of the lines, the condition of the skin, the amount of muscle action around the filled area and the lifestyle of the individual.

Most people return 5 to 7 months after the initial procedure for a top-up dermal filler in the lips and lines around the mouth where a lot of movement occurs. Alternatively, patients may return in 6 to 12 months for areas such as, the frown lines where there is less muscle movement.

It is best to combine the  dermal filler treatment  with  wrinkle prevention injections   in the upper facial areas to prevent strong and frequent muscle movements so that the  dermal filler injections  last longer.

When anti-winkle injections can be injected above and below the lips to help reduce creasing, pursing or puckering of the lip muscles. This then prevents the vertical lines (or smoker’s lines) going into the lips, and makes the dermal fillers last longer in the lips and around the mouth.

How long the effect of the temporary dermal filler lasts varies from person to person. It is important to understand your expectations before the treatment and consult with your treating physician.

The treatment takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes and the results are immediate, as evidenced from our  before and after dermal filler photo gallery.

The consultation consists of patient education, preparation and treating the desired areas. Local anaesthesia is combined into the dermal filler gel to help make the treatment as comfortable as possible. The actual  dermal filler injections  only take a few minutes. Dr Tavakoli caters to a wide demographic in  Sydney; dermal filler treatments  performed by Dr Tavakoli’s Practice Nurse are regarded safe, accurate and effective.

Temporary fillers are generally well tolerated, presenting few side effects other than those expected from the procedure (i.e. the total volume of product injected into a confined plane in the skin.)

Common side effects of  dermal filler treatments  include swelling, pain, redness, itching, discoloration, tenderness and occasional bruising. Swelling is the most likely side effect because temporary filler attracts the body’s own water to the area. Other side effects may include minor lumps, which usually resolve and smooth out quickly during the week.

Typically, resolution is spontaneous within a few days after injection into the skin, and within a week after injection of dermal filler into the lips.

You cannot be allergic to temporary fillers. Infection should not occur when practicing good injection technique, of which, Dr Tavakoli has gained proficiency in his  Sydney dermal filler practice.

Temporary  dermal fillers  are safe because it contains no animal proteins, allergens or chemicals.

Since  dermal filler  contains only minimally modified product that is a natural constituent of human tissues, it is biocompatible and very safe.

Overall, local tolerance to the gel is excellent, with the material becoming integrated into local tissues. Degraded dermal filler material is metabolized slowly into the skin and excreted by the same pathways as the natural substance, passing through the liver quickly and is broken down into carbon dioxide and water.

There are no contraindications to the use of temporary fillers and the precautions are mainly those that should be observed for any intra-dermal injection.

Isolated incidents show patients reacting in a hypersensitive nature to the  dermal filler injection.  These reactions have been reported in about one in every 2000 dermal filler treatments. These have consisted of swelling and induration at the implant site, sometimes with oedema in the surrounding tissues. Redness, tenderness and, rarely, acne-form papules may also occur. The reactions have started either shortly after injection or after a delay of 2 to 4 weeks and have generally been described as mild to moderate, and self-limiting with an average duration of two weeks. In pronounced cases a short course of oral corticosteroids may prove effective. In addition, rare cases (less than 1 in 15,000 treatments) of granuloma formation, superficial necrosis and urticaria have been reported during post treatment of dermal filler.

Patient tolerance and acceptance is very good provided that patients are forewarned that there may be a few days of discomfort before optimal results are achieved. These results can be gaged from  before and after dermal filler photographs.

No! With Dr Tavakoli’s expert advice and practice in Sydney, dermal filler treatments will leave you less wrinkled! You will have delayed wrinkles and age lines!

The skin will return to its original state if you decide against further dermal filler treatments, but the plumping effect on the skin will have delayed further development of wrinkles, had the temporary fillers treatment not intervened.

Choosing to undergo a dermal filler treatment means you will have delayed the development of age lines, by not further squeezing skin collagen tissue out of the base of your creases and wrinkles.

Yes, but for a first treatment it is probably better to schedule your appointment for dermal filler at the end of the day.

Filling around the naso-labial area and under the angles of the mouth, usually produces little downtime, depending on the amount of temporary fillers used. Filling of scars and depressions settles within a few hours.

If you are having dermal fillers lip enhancements your lips will be swollen for 1-3 days. Clients with softer, younger lips, in their twenties or thirties, will recover quickly, often the next day.Clients in their forties and fifties wanting lip enhancement, should preferably fill them in small stages, progressively over several dermal fillers sessions. This gradually stretches the age-scar lines in the lips and makes the enhancement more comfortable.

Smoothing Wrinkles And Folds
Optimal smoothing of age-related perioral lines and oral commissures can be accomplished using combinations of all three products. For example, a deep fold can be treated by first injecting the thicker and stronger temporary fillers and then by adding the thinner Gel on top.

Shaping Facial Contours
When creating volume in the contours of the face or correcting hollow cheeks, the thicker Gel is the right choice. It lifts skin from the cheeks and chin by adding volume in the deep layer of the dermis and/or surface layer of the subcutis. The soft, viscoelastic biodegradable gel adapts to the surrounding tissue.

Lip Sculpting
Many dermal fillers patients want fuller lips, a more pouting look or enhancement of the vermilion border. Lip augmentation can be divided into two steps:
Contouring and Pouting, and Fullness. To achieve pouting and/or fullness, both the Medium and Thicker Gel can be used.
To augment the vermilion border and/or to define the philtrum ridges, the Medium Gel is recommended.

Clients should not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. solarium and sunbathing) or extreme cold for the first few days after the treatment. This is to avoid the risk of inflammation since the area has been disturbed by the injection procedure. However, once the products are integrated in the body they will adjust to a normal body temperature. These temporary gel fillers should not be used where a permanent implant has been placed. For the first 24-48 hours** Keep the treated area free of cosmetics and avoid using moisturisers that contain AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids/Glycolics) BHA, (Beta Hydroxy Acids), or Retinoid gels or creams. A light water-based make up may be applied when necessary.

Apply cool compresses to the treated areas to relieve swelling.

Drink water regularly throughout the day.

Until redness has subsided, avoid all of the following:

  • Drinking alcohol as it opens up blood vessels and may increase bruising or swelling.
  • Strenuous exercise and extremes of hot and cold.
  • Blood thinning medicines such as Aspirin.
  • Facials, facial waxing, Glycolic or AHA peels, Liquid Nitrogen (dry ice) or Laser treatments for 10 to 14 days after temporary fillers injections.

If any lumps should occur in the treated area once swelling has subsided it is recommended that you gently massage that area with clean fingers.
