Gynaecomastia / Male Breast Reduction – Dr Tavakoli’s Philosophy
Gynaecomastia, a medical term meaning enlarged breasts, affects up to 30% of men in Australia. Often it’s caused by anabolic steroid use, and as well as being painful, the condition can understandably cause a lot of emotional distress.
Gynaecomastia surgery, more commonly known as male breast reduction surgery provides a remedy to this, and luckily, it can be resolved using an advanced body contouring procedure, which selectively removed unwanted body fat.
Is male breast reduction surgery for you?
During your consultation with Dr Tavakoli, explain your goals and expectations of the Gynaecomastia surgery. It is absolutely imperative that you communicate the degree of flatness you would expect from this operation. Photographs and other tools may be used in order to establish your expectations prior to any sugery. Dr Tavakoli will assess the nature of your breasts and the elasticity of your skin to determine the cause of your breast enlargement. It may be caused by fatty tissue and/or glandular tissue. Mostly, it will be a combination of the latter.
Being prepared and making informed decisions is important in undergoing any type of surgery. Consultation is necessary prior to undertaking Gynaecomastia surgery as well as an understanding of upfront Gynaecomastia surgery costs or any additional costs of male breast reduction that may arise during recovery.
What are the procedures available?
Male breast reduction is performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis using a light general anaesthesia. The procedure can last from one to two hours depending on the extent of correction.
- Liposuction If your gynecomastia is primarily caused by fatty tissue, liposuction is usually the procedure of choice. Liposuction surgery is a procedure used to actually remove unwanted localized deposits of fat cells from the body. A cannula is inserted through a tiny incision placed in an inconspicuous location (usually in the armpit) on the skin. Using a vacuum system attached to the cannula, excess fat cells are sucked out. The result of this approach to male breast reduction is a resculpting of bulging breasts into more attractive contours.
- Traditional Surgical Excision will also be used if your gynecomastia is the result of a glandular enlargement, where liposuction alone is not likely to be adequate.. The excision may be performed alone or in conjunction with liposuction. Typically, the surgical incision is placed on the edge of the areola (colored area of the nipple) and in the underarm area (for liposuction). Your surgeon will work through these incisions to cut away the excess glandular tissue, fat and skin from the breast.
Please note that if your male breast reduction requires the removal of significant amounts of tissue, larger skin incisions may be required. This in particular is true in patients who have experienced massive weight loss and are therefore left with abundance of saggy skin.
What is recovery from male breast reduction surgery like?
Bed rest is recommended for the first day. You will experience some pain for several days. Following your gynaecomastia surgery, you will wear surgical dressings and a special compression garment. This garment is needed to be worn for about four to six weeks.
There may be a drain tube coming out from under the armpit, which usually remains in place for 24-48 hours. The purpose of this drain tube is to create a means of sucking fluid out of the operated region.
Most discomfort associated with breast surgery can be controlled with male breast reduction surgery can be controlled with oral medication prescribed by your surgeon. Antibiotics may also be prescribed. Most men experience some degree of swelling, bruising and tenderness. These symptoms should subside in a short time. Within about 10 days, all sutures are removed. Dr Tavakoli will advise you on a proper schedule for returning to your normal activities. Most patients are back to work within 7-10 days.
In order, to maximize the result of your operation, Dr Tavakoli requires you to attend a physiotherapist who would use massage and ultrasound technique to facilitate the removal of lumpiness and uneven areas in your breast. All up 4-6 sessions of physiotherapy is recommended.
Overview of Male Breast Reduction Surgery in Sydney
Male breast reduction surgery is a specialised procedure designed to treat gynecomastia in Sydney, a condition where men experience an abnormal enlargement of breast tissue. This condition, which can arise due to hormonal imbalances, weight fluctuations, certain medications, or genetics, often causes physical discomfort and can affect chest proportions. While gynecomastia is not uncommon, treatment options like surgery are considered for persistent cases where non-surgical approaches such as diet and exercise prove ineffective.
Dr Tavakoli aims to create a flatter and more proportional chest contour, typically through liposuction, excision, or a combination of both techniques. Each case is unique, and the approach taken depends on the severity of the condition and the underlying cause. It is essential to approach male breast reduction surgery as a medical intervention rather than a cosmetic choice, with thorough consideration of the procedure’s benefits, risks, and recovery requirements.
What is Breast Reduction?
Male breast reduction surgery addresses excess tissue or fat in the chest area, which may occur as a result of gynecomastia or pseudo-gynecomastia (fat deposition without glandular tissue enlargement). The procedure involves the removal of excess glandular tissue, fat, and sometimes skin to create a more balanced chest appearance. While the exact surgical technique depends on the patient’s specific condition, the ultimate goal is to reduce chest prominence while maintaining natural proportions.
Purpose of Male Breast Reduction Surgery
The primary purpose of male breast reduction surgery is to alleviate the physical discomfort caused by gynecomastia and to restore a symmetrical, proportional chest appearance. In some cases, excessive breast tissue may cause functional limitations, including difficulties with physical activities or discomfort from clothing. Beyond the physical benefits, the surgery aims to provide patients with a sense of normalcy in their body proportions, supporting overall comfort.
Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
Determining whether you are a suitable candidate for gynecomastia surgery in Sydney involves a detailed evaluation of your health, lifestyle, and the nature of your condition. Candidates for male breast reduction are typically individuals who have stable body weight, good physical health, and persistent breast tissue that does not respond to non-surgical measures such as weight management or hormonal therapy.
During the consultation process, Dr Tavakoli will assess the degree of gynecomastia and discuss any underlying factors contributing to the condition. For some individuals, gynecomastia may be a temporary issue caused by medications or hormonal changes, and in these cases, surgery may not be necessary. However, if the condition has been present for a prolonged period or significantly impacts daily life, surgery may be considered.
Initial Consultation Process
The initial consultation for male breast reduction surgery is a vital step in assessing suitability and planning the procedure. During this session, we will review your medical history, evaluate the extent of gynecomastia, and discuss the surgical options. This is also an opportunity to outline the risks, expected outcomes, and recovery process to ensure realistic expectations. Patients are encouraged to ask questions and address any concerns about the procedure during the consultation.
The Male Breast Reduction Procedure Explained
Male breast reduction surgery is performed with the aim of safely and effectively addressing excess breast tissue while ensuring optimal results. Here’s what to expect before, during, and after the surgery:
Before the Surgery
Preparation is a critical aspect of the surgical process. Patients may be required to undergo specific medical tests to ensure they are fit for surgery. Pre-surgical instructions typically include avoiding certain medications or supplements that could increase bleeding risk, as well as making arrangements for transportation and support during the recovery period. Additionally, Dr Tavakoli will discuss what patients can expect on the day of surgery and provide clear guidance on preparing for the procedure.
During the Surgery
The procedure itself varies based on the severity and underlying cause of gynecomastia. For cases involving excess fatty tissue, liposuction is often used to remove fat deposits. In cases with significant glandular tissue enlargement, excision techniques are required to remove the tissue directly. In some situations, both methods are combined to achieve the desired chest contour. The surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia, ensuring patient comfort throughout the procedure. Depending on the complexity of the case, the surgery may take one to three hours to complete.
Recovery and Aftercare
Recovery from male breast reduction in Sydney typically involves a gradual return to normal activities over the course of several weeks. Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the chest area, which can be managed with prescribed medications. Compression garments are often recommended to support healing, reduce swelling, and help maintain the chest’s new contour.
Follow-up appointments with us are a crucial part of aftercare, allowing the surgeon to monitor progress and address any concerns. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities during the initial recovery period and to follow their surgeon’s guidance closely to optimise results.
Risks and Complications with Male Breast Reduction Surgery
As with any surgical procedure, male breast reduction carries potential risks and complications. While the procedure is generally safe when performed by a qualified surgeon, it’s essential for patients to understand the potential side effects, which may include:
- Swelling and bruising
- Scarring
- Changes in nipple sensation (temporary or permanent)
- Infection or delayed wound healing
- Asymmetry or uneven results
To minimise risks, it is important to follow all pre-and post-operative instructions provided by us. Open communication with the surgical team ensures that any concerns or complications are addressed promptly.
