Plastic surgery of the genitals is a subject most women feel uncomfortable talking about, particularly those who are self-conscious about the look of their vagina or who suffer discomfort from extended labia minora.
If you have considered a cosmetic enhancement of your vagina it is important to understand that you are not alone. Many women seek an improvement in the attractiveness of their vagina and there is nothing wrong with wishing to feel comfortable with your body and your genitals.
You should not feel embarrassed. Instead, feel proud of yourself for choosing to take control of your happiness.
Every year Dr Tavakoli performs more than 400 labiaplasty procedures in Sydney alone, providing evidence for the growing trend of women opting to alter their vagina’s aesthetics.

What Causes Protruding Labia Minora (Inner Lips)?
Oversized vaginal lips can either be a genetic condition or a result of one or more childbirths.
Having elongated labia minora can cause discomfort when wearing tight clothing and even lead to irritation or rash. In many cases women experience distress or unpleasant sensations during sexual intercourse or elect to avoid sexual interactions altogether due to feelings of embarrassment with regards to their vagina.
How does Labiaplasty (also Known as Labioplasty) Work?
Labiaplasty is a safe surgical procedure that reduces the size of the vaginal lips for a result that is neater and more hygienic.
Sculpting the vagina can also involve reducing the emphasis of the clitoral hood, correcting scar tissue or tearing from childbirth and liposuction to remove excess fat deposits from the pubic region.
The incision is very inconspicuous and is virtually imperceptible in time. Dissolving stiches are used in the procedure and no dressings are required. Following the recovery period (generally one month) erotic sensation and vaginal function fully return to normal.
As with any operation patients will experience some discomfort and mild swelling with bruising will be present in the days directly after surgery. Dr Tavakoli recommends patients take 7-10 days off work following the procedure.
Labiaplasty Recovery Period
With proper care, a full recovery from labiaplasty is generally achieved within 30 days following the surgery. At this time you will be able to resume intercourse.
Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure meaning that you will be able to go home directly after the operation. Since no dressings are required and the stitches are dissolvable you can shower the next day and resume normal everyday light activities.
Pain is minimal and can be controlled with mild painkillers. Swelling and bruising can be expected but both symptoms will subside after peaking two to three days after the operation.
Benefits of Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is a permanent solution that will last for the rest of your life. Following the procedure patients experience significant improvement in personal comfort as well finding it easier to specific items of clothing such as snug pants.
Sexual sensation remains normal and can even be enhanced, improving sexual relations through the removal of discomfort present prior to labiaplasty.
How does Labiaplasty Differ from Vaginal Tightening (Vaginaplasty)?
While the two procedures are often done in conjunction, it is important to understand that labiaplasty and Vaginaplasty are very different operations.
Labiaplasty relates to sculpting the outside or visible portion of the vagina and Vaginaplasty involves narrowing the vaginal opening and tightening the vaginal canal to correct vaginal relaxation.
Vaginal relaxation is a potential result of childbirth, as muscles in the vaginal canal are stretched and damaged during the birthing process.
Women who suffer from poor tone, strength and control of their perineum muscles experience a loss of sexual pleasure and may find it difficult to reach sexual gratification. Vaginal tightening (Vaginaplasty) can correct this condition.
Post-op Care for Vaginaplasty
Following vaginal tightening surgery you will experience bruising, swelling, and minor discomfort in the groin area. These symptoms will subside over a period of two to three weeks and Dr Tavakoli will ask that you wash with plain water three times a day for one week following your operation.
Vaginaplasty is more invasive compared to labiaplasty alone and so patients must avoid sexual intercourse for six weeks to avoid injury to healing incisions.
Determining Your Candidacy for Vaginal Cosmetic Surgery
The best method for determining whether or not you are a suitable candidate for labiaplasty and/or Vaginaplasty is to meet with Dr Tavakoli at his Sydney clinic.
Due to the personal nature of these procedures female members of our staff are also available for women who would feel more comfortable initially talking to someone of the same sex.
